President Carter with Barbecue for Japanese State Dinner

In this photograph, taken May 2, 1979, a group including President Jimmy Carter, Social Secretary Gretchen Poston, and White House Executive Chef Henry Haller inspect the preparations on the West Terrace for a State Dinner to be held for Prime Minister Masayoshi Ōhira of Japan. Included on the menu was a barbecue of roast suckling pig, made specially for Ōhira due to his interest in tasting the traditional American cuisine. Some of the pigs can be seen on the grill in the foreground of this photograph. The West Terrace is located on the roof of the West Colonnade. This photograph is part of a collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. Haller served as executive chef at the White House from 1966-1987, during the presidencies of Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.
